Dukan Diet Start: Day 1

Well, here we are.  I’m just about to sit down to dinner on the first day of my Dukan Diet.

I have a roast in the oven, loaded with potatoes, carrots, onions and mushrooms – of which, I can only eat the roast, but my husband can eat the other stuff.  It smells so good – I hope that the meat picks up on the other flavors.

So.  Day 1.

I weighed myself this morning, and I came in at 258.9 lbs.  Down another pound, just in time for dieting!

I ran my weight and other weight information through the Dukan Calculator found on their website, and immediately groaned.

I have 88.25 lbs to lose to hit my “True Weight.”  I know that this isn’t going to happen overnight, but man.  That’s a lot.  Not only that, but it’s going to take me until the end of next February to lose the weight – that is, if their calculator is more than just a gimmick.

And worse yet: two years to finish the whole plan from beginning to end.  I guess when I pick a commitment, I pick them well!  All well, in the end, I’ll be much happier and healthier.  It just sucks the big one that I’ll be stuck in the Cruise Phase over Christmas this year.  I suppose I have a ton of time to figure out how I’ll handle that!

So, now with my roast pulled out of the oven and resting, I’ll move on to the rest of my day.

What have I noticed so far?

I haven’t been hungry.  Like, really not hungry, and I haven’t eaten that much.  Well, I was hungry around 10:30, but I was out shopping.  When I got home, I just had a glass of skim milk, and that kept me just fine until I could get groceries put away and make a few phone calls before lunch.

Breakfast was poached eggs.  Then lunch was fish – some fresh cod, steamed with a bit of pepper.  Not much, probably about 6 ounces cooked.  Again, it was enough to satisfy my hunger.

But the craving for anything carb, even fruit which I don’t normally like all that much, is coming through very harshly, and I ended up snacking on deli slices and cottage cheese for the rest of the afternoon.

Dr. Dukan says in the book that for the first 3 days, or until the carb cravings level off, to eat as much as you want off of the list.  This is a good thing, but at the same time, I’m really trying hard not to overdo it.  I’m far from the richest gal in the world, and eating as much food on the list as I want just isn’t an option, even if it’s only for the first few days.

Even right now, I’m not hungry at all, but this need to satisfy my carb craving is pretty intense.  So, I’ll take Dr. Dukan’s advice and eat it away.  I kind of feel like I don’t have a choice at this point – losing weight is far more important.  I’ve been on carb restricted diets before, though not this restrictive, so I know the drill and agree that after the first few days, these cravings will disappear.  The bonus with this diet is that you don’t feel carb-deprived as well as hungry.  That’s just serious misery.

Other than that, my only real concern after living through most of the first day is how to get creative with my food list.  I have 6 more days to endure, and I’ll admit that my menu wasn’t spectacular.  There are quite a few recipes in the book – I’m going to have to go through them tonight and see if I can get some ideas.  Right now, I can see eating like the way I did today once a week, but not every day for 7 days – and certainly not every other day for 280 days.  I’m not too worried though – I’m pretty sure that I can come up with some great ideas.  I am fairly savvy in the kitchen.

Not much to report otherwise – I didn’t feel any more tired than I usually do, though I did take a nice afternoon nap.  I did get my exercise in first thing this morning – I got in 20 minutes of walking shortly after 6AM because it looked like it might start raining.

So that’s it.  One day down, 686 to go.  Sigh.

That’s all for today.  I’ll update on Wednesday evening.  Maybe my carb cravings will have gone away by then.

Oh, and I know that I said that I’d post measurements and maybe a before pic, but I’ve decided against measuring regularly.  I’m going to measure for myself, and then probably not do it any more than once a month.  As for the before pic, I think I might actually do that, but it won’t be today.

What I will share is what the Dukan website spit out at me as far as my weights and dates are concerned.  I want to note that this is a free service, but you need to buy The Dukan Diet Book and give it a good read.

Note: The Dukan Diet Calculator is only available at the official Dukan Diet website.  It’s free to set up an account and get your results.
